The Fall of Rome - August 18-19, 2010

Agenda:
1. Attendance/Check HW
2.  Re-organize into our new seating chart
3.  Journal - The Greatness of America (pg 5)
4.  BrainPop - The Fall of the Roman Empire
5.  The Fall of Rome PPT (pg 6)
Today we began our history curriculum with an overview of the fall of the Roman Empire.  We first started out with the following journal prompt, which students responded to on page 5 in the Interactive Notebook:
"The United States of America is a great country, but we also have our problems and challenges.  List three problems America has.  What can we do to fix one of those problems?"
It was amazing to hear student responses, and to see how similar some of the challenges we face are challenges that the Roman Empire faced near the end of its existence.  We focused our discussion on the positive aspects of American culture and government, and how we can hopefully learn from the Romans and draw from our own strength so we don't repeat their fate.  We then watched a brief video from BrainPop.com on the Fall of the Roman Empire, followed by a PowerPoint presentation and discussion on the Fall of Rome.
The homework for tonight is actually something I need parent help with:  the Online Parent Survey.  Parents can find the survey by clicking HERE.  There a few brief questions that help me to better connect with parents so we can form a partnership to help your child be successful this year.  Thanks so much to parents for taking the time to complete this survey!
