Adinkra Mat Project - 10/25-26/2017

ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S)/BIG IDEAS: What was life like in sub-Saharan Africa?

HWPrepare to present your Adinkra mat this Friday.
HWPrepare for an open-note Africa Quiz on Monday, 10/30 (likely 15-20 questions). It will be based on Chapter 5 (5:1, 5:2, and 5:3; not including the story of Sundiata at the end of the chapter), with an emphasis on African Proverbs and what we reviewed in the Kingdoms of West Africa Study Guide.

AGENDA:
  1. Begin the Adinkra Mat
  2. Finished your mat early? Here's what you can do:
    1. Show it to me to verify you are done. Ask me for a Rubric Sheet to make sure you did everything correctly.
    2. Study 5:1, 5:2, and 5:3 for your Monday quiz
    3. Send a special Halloween card to kids at Children's Hospital Los Angeles
    4. Using evidence--Where did Lady Leshurr shoot her video for "Queen's Speech Ep. 5"?
      1. A prize will go to whoever gets the GPS coordinates the closest!! Submit your response HERE!!

ADINKRA MAT PROJECT DIRECTIONS

    1. Choose your favorite proverb from the list of African Proverbs you got last week
    2. Check out the Adinkra symbols HERE or HERE. You'll choose a minimum of four symbols.
    3. Create a ROUGH DRAFT of your Adinkra mat in your notebook or on scratch paper. You should include your proverb in large print in the middle of your mat, surrounded by Adinkra symbols. There should be at least 4 different types of Adinkra symbols on your mat, and a minimum of 12 Adinkra symbols total. You may repeat symbols, if you wish, or you can have 12 different symbols.
    4. Take a piece of cardstock from the basket (I ask that each student take only one piece of cardstock). I strongly urge you to trace in pencil before making anything permanent.
    5. Create the FINAL DRAFT of your Adinkra mat, including at least four different colors. Looking for inspiration for your design? Do a Google Images search for "African cloth" or "African patterns"
    6. On Friday you will present your Adinkra mat, including an explanation of why you chose your proverb, what your proverb means to you, why you chose your Adinkra symbols, and what each symbol means. The grading rubric will look like THIS.

      African Proverb Word Cloud - 10/18/2017

      ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S)/BIG IDEAS: How can we apply the wisdom of African proverbs to our everyday life?

      HW: Read 5:2. Prepare for a 6-8 GAME SHOW QUIZ tomorrow on both 5:1 and 5:2.

        1. Visit https://www.wordclouds.com/
        2. I recommend you use the Wizard
        3. Decide which text you would like to copy and paste into your word cloud
          1. Use selected proverbs from OUR LIST OF PROVERBS HERE
          2. Use the most challenging or most popular from OUR SURVEY YESTERDAY
        4. Adjust the color, font, theme, size, shape and word list as needed to make your perfect word cloud! Ask Mr. Ippolito why the word list matters.
        5. Download your word cloud to your Chromebook using File > Save as PNG
        6. Email your word cloud image as an attachment to rippolito.history@blogger.com. In the subject line of your email, type your first and last name and your class period. Leave the message part of the email blank. Then click the blue Send button.
        7. Visit our classroom website at http://sv301.blogspot.com to see your word cloud, plus other word clouds created by other students!

      3. All done with your Word Cloud? Here's what you can do:
        1. Review your list of proverbs. Circle the numbers of any you would still like to ask about. Remember, by the end of this week you should understand the meaning of all 51.
        2. Dig deeper into the question of THEMES. Many of these proverbs can fall into common themes or categories. By observing the common themes among the proverbs, it can give us an idea of what West African cultures valued. To practice, start by looking for the theme of UNITY. Which of the proverbs deal with the theme of unity, sticking together, standing together as one? Finished with UNITY? Look for other themes, and identify which proverbs fit into that theme.
        3. Start reading 5:2. There's a game-show style quiz tomorrow on 5:1 and 5:2.
