In 1959, Spanish painter Salvador Dali created his Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. Examine the painting in detail. What details do you notice? Is Dali's painting favorable or unfavorable toward Columbus? What evidence can you find? Based on what you know so far about Christopher Columbus, should he be considered a hero or a villain? Finishing Mesoamerica - 5/18/2015

1. Grading - As we enter the last three weeks of the semester, please make sure you make all grade inquiries in person

2. Make a Difference Projects - presentations next week
  • 2-3 minute TED-style memorized presentation (here are young people doing TED talks)
  • Your presentation must answer these three simple questions: 1) What did you attempt to do? 2) To what extent do you believe you were successful? 3) What did you learn from this process?
  • Slideshow may contain words, but may not contain a script
  • You must make the effort to schedule your presentation between May 26 and June 1
  • I realize how time-intensive some of these projects have been! I have decided that a successfully-completed Make a Difference Project is now worth 4 Above and Beyond points

3. CAASPP Testing this week - final week of testing! All students will return to their original testing rooms from Wednesday and Thursday of last week.

4. Blog Post #14 - Using Google News search
  1. Visit Google News and search for a story that involves the Maya, the Inca, or the Aztecs. Use search terms such as Aztec, Aztecs, Aztec Empire, Aztec civilization, Inca, Incan, Incan Empire, Inca Empire, Maya, Mayan, Mayan ruins, Mayan civilization. When you change your search terms just a little bit, you can get completely different search results.
  2. Look for a story from a reliable news source. If you're not sure how to evaluate reliability, check out this great resource from the University of Texas.
  3. Write a one-paragraph summary (5-7 sentences) to explain what the article is about.
  4. Write a second paragraph (5-7 sentences) in which you explain how this article relates or connects to something you have already learned about the Maya, the Inca, or the Aztec civilizations.
  5. Write a third paragraph (this one can be short) where you say something to your reader like this: "To check out this article for yourself, visit . . ." and then copy and paste the web address you visited. Highlight the web address and make sure it is a hyperlink. You can do this by clicking the Link button in the Blogger toolbar, or by using the CTRL-K keyboard shortcut.

The Last Four Weeks - 5/4/2015

1. Blog Post #13 - The "Make a Difference" Project is in its final four weeks. You should have your project completed by Sunday, May 31.
  • Part 1 - What progress have you made on your project in the last six weeks since we began? Do you feel like you are on pace to finish successfully? Are you still motivated to complete your project? (respond in 2-3 sentences)
  • Part 2 - Have the goals of your project evolved or changed over time, or have they always remained the same? What do you hope to accomplish by May 31? (respond in 2-3 sentences)
  • Part 3 (complete this after you watch BrainPop) - Read "Way Back When" from BrainPop's FYI (at the bottom of today's blog post). What is a conquistador? What does the word inevitable mean? Do you think it was inevitable that the native empires of Mesoamerica and South America would be destroyed by Europeans? In your opinion, was there any way for the native empires and the European settlers to peacefully co-exist? (respond in 4-6 sentences)
