Renaissance Week - 2/23-27/2015

TODAY IS WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25. BEFORE YOU BEGIN WORKING INDEPENDENTLY ON YOUR RENAISSANCE MINI-BOOK, CLOSE YOUR CHROMEBOOK AND AS A CLASS WATCH THE CRASH COURSE VIDEO ON "THE RENAISSANCE," AND THEN DISCUSS THIS FIRST IN SMALL GROUPS AND THEN AS A CLASS:

3. All this week you will be working on your Renaissance Mini-Book. Each day you will begin by watching a short video where you will learn a little more about the Renaissance. Then you will continue work on your Mini-Book. Bring your colored pencils and earbuds (to watch any of the instructional videos I have shared with you) on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week.

Team Titans Medieval Times Bus Assignments - 2/12/2015

If you go home after school, plan to return to Sierra Vista by 3:15.

    Medieval Throwdown: Pope vs. King - 2/5/2015


    ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS/BIG IDEAS:
    Why did Pope Gregory VII and Henry IV oppose each other so bitterly? What happens when people get into a "flame war" with each other? Are flame war discussions ever helpful or productive?

    AGENDA:

    1. Watch background video on Gregory VII and Henry IV; start video at 0:32 and pause at 3:02 (we'll watch the rest later in class)


    2. In groups, you are going to do a Close Reading of the Letters of Gregory VII and Henry IV. The table leader should guide their group through these steps, and the timekeeper should keep each group on pace. TABLE LEADERS---Please note that today the only person who needs a Chromebook is the TABLE LEADER.
    1. Scan the text first for challenging words. CIRCLE those challenging words. Assign half of your table to read the front (Pope Gregory's letter) and the other half to read the back (Henry IV's letter). 5 min max.
    2. Now READ your side of the text for understanding. UNDERLINE phrases that you think may be important to understanding the meaning of the text. 8 min max.
    3. With your reading partner, write a SHORT SUMMARY of the main ideas on the side of each paragraph or section of the text. 8 min max.
    4. SHARE your summary with the other students in your table group so that everyone in the group understands both sides. 5-7 min.
    5. DISCUSS today's essential questions (7-8 min):
      1. Why did Pope Gregory VII and Henry IV oppose each other so bitterly?
      2. What happens when people get into a "flame war" with each other?
